Explore the hidden side of Hungary jumping from the beautiful city of Budapest. Dive under the skin of the city to discover its historical influences and contemporary movements. Journey on to the vineyard region to taste its world renowned wines before heading on to Orseg National Park to experience village lifestyle, artisan communities and traditions, and the region’s unspoilt nature. Get creative with locals in chocolate making, honey making, cheese making, butter making or pottery workshops. Additionally, the experience offers opportunities to get active with cycling, horse riding or canoeing.
Day 1: Budapest
Arrive to Budapest. Sightseeing in Pest side: Jewish quarter, ruin bars; dinner in a small and cosy restaurant. Optional alternative extra program is enjoying a Turkish bath (either days 1, 2 or 8)
Day 2: Budapest
Hearty breakfast in a cozy café. City sightseeing including castle district, cultural institutes, churches, bridges which are on the list of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. Explore and enjoy the serenity on Margaret Island: the island provides a peaceful hideaway from hectic downtown Budapest with large green areas, flowery gardens, old trees, and lots of entertainment. The island’s attractions include romantic walkways, medieval ruins, a small zoo, musical fountain, a water tower, swimming pools, a water park, open air theatre and cinema, and some great clubs. Boat trip on the river Danube – back to the city centre and to the hotel on the public transport boat. Dinner and visit the Hungarian craft beer bars. Optional alternatives for the afternoon include workshops in painting textiles with plants, bags from recycled materials, silkscreen.
Day 3: Etyek
Breakfast in the hotel before heading to Etyek, one of the most famous wine regions of Hungary. A nice little village located 26 km from Budapest with traditional and beautifully renovated wine cellars. The wineries all have their own products, but besides the great wine there are a lot of other interesting and delicious food produce. Cheese tasting on the cow farm and lunch on grill. Visit a chocolate factory and enjoy chocolate tasting. Dinner in the winery, tasting selected wines of the region. Accommodated at the local inn. Optional alternatives include chocolate making, cheese making, butter making, or a farm tour.
Day 4: Lake Balaton - Orseg National Park
Breakfast. Travel to Lake Balaton, 1.5 hours from Etyek. Visit Fenékpuszta Bird Ringing and Repatriating Station where you can see birds being cured and ringed. Sandwich lunch at the station. After lunch, enjoy a birdwatching tour where we have a good chance to see the Great Bustard, Saker, Imperial Eagle, Pygmy Cormorant, Woodpeckers, Eagle and Ural Owl. Optional alternatives include canoeing on the Lake Balaton, swimming or relaxation on the lake beach, visit the Festetics Palace. Travel to the Őrség National Park, 1 hour from Fenékpuszta, arriving between 18:00 -20:00. Overnight at Kékmadár Guesthouse in Kisrákos. Traditional cauldron dinner and campfire, tasting the products of the nearby artisan pálinka (fruit brandy) factory.
Day 5: Orseg
Breakfast with local specialities of eggplant cream, home-made bread and home-made strudel with marrow and poppy seeds. Excursion to the alpaca farm led by the owner. In the afternoon, enjoy a handicraft program in Őrség. The locations loamy soil made pottery flourish historically. Professional knowledge was passed on to the children in several families. During the workshop, we provide the clay, the tools, the paint, the glaze and the brushes. We use the electric-powered potter’s wheel, to fire and to glaze the materials. Dinner includes specialities from Őrség. Optional alternative programs include a horse carriage, horse riding, bicycle tour, massage or visiting the Pálinka factory.
Day 6: Orseg
Ample breakfast. Visit to the herb and bee garden, which is 3.5 hectares in size. Lunch at the farm. Later, beekeeper Gyula Galambos will disclose the secrets of honey making and the abilities of bees. We will have delicious teas with a two course lunch made of local, high quality bio ingredients next to a cosy and warm oven. Naturally, we will also have the chance to taste several special honey products, including seedy honey, biscuits, and soft drinks made with honey. The program will be led by beekeeper Gyula and herbalist Csilla.
Day 7: Orseg - Budapest
Breakfast. Walking excursion around the national park. The tour includes observation of local farms learning about the different species of fruits around the region. Visiting local orchards and tasting local fruits with a fruit specialist and conservationist, president of the Göcsej Conservationist Foundation. We visit Ferencz Farmland to explore the animals, local vegetables and enjoy cheese tasting! Departure to Budapest around 3 pm. Dinner in a ambient restaurant in Budapest.
Day 8: Departure
Departure flight home or onward journey.
