Day 1: Tbilisi
Meet with your Georgian guide at the airport and transfer to the city centre for Tbilisi sightseeing. Enjoy Old Tbilisi walking tour, seeing the highlights of the Old Town with beautiful Orthodox Christian Churches, Mosque, Synagogue, famous and refreshing Sulphur Baths, narrow cobbled streets with hanging wooden carved multi-coloured balconies, 19th century houses following the architectural styles of 19th century Europe, Narikala Fortress, the glass Bridge of Peace, Freedom Square and Rustaveli Avenue. In the evening we meet local musicians to talk about Georgian polyphonic singing. We’ll learn more about Georgian song sounds and life of contemporary musicians and of course enjoy their songs! Dinner and overnight in Tbilisi. (D)
Day 2: Gombori Pass - Vardisubani - Alaverdi - Gremi - Kvareli - Tbilisi
This morning we drive into the Kakheti region well known for its wine producing. We enjoy superb views of Great Caucasus Mountains and valleys of Kakheti, acknowledge traditions and culture of the country and region, taste wines and delicious food. We drive over Gombori Pass and enjoy the nice view from the top. Our first stop is at local masters where we see how traditional Georgian wine jars, Qvevri, are made. We taste his homemade wine and traditional Chacha (Georgian firewater) before continuing to Alaverdi Cathedral which was the highest church in Georgia for many centuries. Our next stop is picturesque murals of Gremi museum/monastery. Return to Tbilisi. Driving 330km (B)
Day 3: Mtskheta - Tserovani - Uplistsikhe - Borjomi
Discover more about the history of the ancient capital of Georgia, Mtskheta, and see UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Jvari Monastery (6th century) and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (11th century). Svetitskhoveli is known as the church where the part of Jesus’ Robe is buried and is the holiest church in Georgia. We then visit the refugee settlement in Tserovani where at a tiny studio we learn more about Georgian enamel making and make a ring, earrings or a pendant. Continue to Gori to visit Uplistsikhe Cave Town to enjoy a across the sun-stone plateau. Initially there had been more than 500 caves, but during the existence of 3000 years it has lost much of it. After the tour we drive to mineral water town of Borjomi which was a favourite place for Russian Tsars for summer visits. Dinner and overnight at a family hotel in Borjomi. Driving 190km. (B, D)
Day 4: Borjomi - Likani - Kvabiskhevi
Our walking trail starts in the Likani River valley, where visitors come across rare species of yew, some 800-1000 years old. You will ascend approximately 3 hours on Nikoloz Romanov Trail enjoying beautiful panoramic views. The scenery continues for an hour and then the route goes down to Kvabiskhevi Valley by a steep descent. We walk a bit to meet our vehicle and then drive to Borjomi. Dinner and overnight at a family hotel in Borjomi. Driving 20km. Hiking distance 13km, walking time 6hr, ↑780m↓850m (B, D).
Day 5: Borjomi - Gelati - Mestia
This morning we drive to visit Gelati UNESCO World Heritage Monastery. Continue to Upper Svaneti province which is fabulous with its forests, roaring rivers, and ice-peaks. We have a short photo stop at Engruri Hydro Power Plant. Dinner and overnight at a family hotel in Mestia. Driving 390km (B, D)
Day 6: Mestia - Mulakhi - Mestia
In the morning we walk to Mulakhi and enjoy the marvelous views all over. We walk back to Mestia and visit Machubi, a tower museum and explore an unexpected treasure of local History Museum (closed on Mondays). Dinner and overnight at a family hotel in Mestia. Driving distance: 7 km. Trekking ↑500m ↓350m (14 km), moderate. (B, D)
Day 7: Mestia - Adishi
Morning starts by driving a short distance by 4WD to Mulakhi. Ready with our day packs and off we go to explore these real gems of the area with so many wonderful natural colours and exciting dotted households. Through the forest and rhododendron bushes we reach the highest point of 2700m today. On today’s walk you’ll have breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Overnight at a very simple home-stay in Adishi (sharing facilities). Hiking distance 15km, walking time 4-5hr, ↑930m↓380m * Due to landslides sometimes the car pass to Adishi is blocked and in this case, we’ll need to take our 2 day packs with us on trek. (B, D)
Day 8: Adishi - Ipraali - Ushguli
This morning we cross the Adishchala River with the help of local horses and continue our walk to Ipraali village passing our highest point today at 2720m, the Chkhutnieri Pass. Across the Khalde village and onto Ipraali to meet our 4WD to take us to Ushguli. Dinner and overnight at a family hotel in Ushguli. Drive 10km. Hiking distance 20km, walking time 7-8hr, ↑620m↓800m (B, LP, D)
Day 9: Ushguli - Mt.Shkhara - Mestia
This morning we’ll take a relatively easy walk to the highest mountain of Georgia – Shkhara (5067m). Return back to Ushguli and by 4WD drive to Mestia. Dinner and overnight at a family hotel in Mestia. Driving 45km. Drive distance 45km. Trekking distance 18km, walking time 5-6hr, ↑↓320m; (B, LP, D)
Day 10: Mestia - Zugdidi - Kutaisi
Morning option of visiting Mestia History museum (closed on Mondays). Drive to Kutaisi. En route optional visit to local market in Zugdidi. Time at a leisure. Dinner and overnight at a family hotel in Kutaisi. Drive 245km (B, D)
Day 11: Kutaisi or Batumi Departure
In the morning drive to Tskaltubo to see underground grotto of stalactites and stalagmites (involves 1-1.5hr walk). Hotel check out at 12pm. Transfer to the airport for departure. (B) *Alternative option return airport from Batumi
