The landscape is marked by steep cliffs, that have been given various forms and colours by centuries of erosion. The beaches, are highly popular amongst surfers, and are the finest surf spots in the country. There is a tremendous variety of beaches, including long stretches of sand and small beaches nestled between the cliffs and rocks where many bird species can be seen. Distance: 6 km or 12 km Approximate time: 4 h
Day 3: Ocean trail in Carrapateira
After a 10 minute transfer you will start the trail in Vilarinha, continuing to the dunes of Carrapateira beach. From here you will continue along the coastal plateau all the way to Amado beach. Along the coast you can see a large number of Seabirds that nest, or that pass through here during migration. There are also a large number of white stork nests in the rocky cliffs, something that is unique in the world. From Praia do Amado, where you can have lunch, the trail continues towards the interior, and the landscape begins to change: gradually species such as mastic trees, the white-leaved rockrose, the sage-leaf rockrose, cork-oaks and cistus begin to appear. The trail ends in Aldeia da Pedralva. Distance: 19 km Approximate time: 6 h
Day 4: Fisherman’s Trail
After a 40 minute transfer you will arrive to the small village of Odeceixe. You will enjoy one of the most outstanding views in the entire territory: Odeceixe beach seen from the majestic Ponta em Branco. You will pass by Azenha do Mar, where you will find a natural fishing harbour and reach Amália beache where the famous fado singer once had a house. You will then enter inland towards the lodging Cerca do Sul in Brejão Distance: 15 km Approximate time: 6 h
Day 5: Zambujeira do Mar Trail
Transfer to Porto das Barcas (20 min) to start the Fisherman’s Trail passing by Zambujeira do Mar. You can opt to start in Cabo do Sardão where you can admire the beautiful lighthouse (adds 6 Km) or you can opt to shorten the walking trail and start in Zambujeira do Mar (less 4 Km). Small fishing harbours inserted into the cliffs’ design, reddish sand dunes and lunar landscapes, the scent of pine tree forests and the sight, seen nowhere else in the world, of storks nesting on the cliffs make this walk a true balm for your senses. Distance: 15 km Approximate time: 6 h
Day 6: Ermelinda Walking Trail
Transfer from Cerca do Sul to Quinta do Barranco da Estrada (around 1h). From Quinta do Barranco da Estrada, this walk through country tracks will be a nice and easy way to get to know the surrounding area. After meandering along a ridge high above the lake, the route takes you down into the fancy white village of Cortes Pereira de Baixo. Here you can stop in the typical Ermelinda’s Bar. The return route takes you back to the lodging through a narrow, leafy valley filled with cork oaks. Distance: 14 km Approximate time: 5 h
Day 7: Vingança Trail
This circular walk starts at the lodging and takes you to the North over a low range of hills, so there is a steady ascent both on the outward and the return leg of the walk. Once in the rural valleys beyond, the landscape really opens up to cultivated fields. Farms are scatered here and there, and there is a bar in the village of Vingança where you can enjoy your picnic. There is also an optional short final stretch up the valley from where you have some great views back over the countryside—another nice spot for lunch. The trail ends in Quinta do Barranco da Estrada where you can enjoy the surrounding area which is very interesting for birdwatching. Distance: 20 km Approximate time: 6 h
